Pudding
by Miette H..
Grade 4
Pudding! Pudding! Feels like mud.
It looks like a bowl of mud.
Slish, slosh, galosh.
Slithers down my throat like a snake slithering down a hill of sand.
Tastes like melted chocolate ice cream.
It feels cold.
Pudding feels cold and slippery.
It is slimy like poi.

LuLu
by Dane T.
Grade 2
Lulu is black like the night sky when clouds are over the moon.

She runs like she is reaching out with her front legs and digging in her claws and pulling the ground toward herself.

She meows when I go outside. She sounds squeaky like baby birds when they are hungry.

She is thinking, "Can I go with you? I want to explore the front yard. I want to play with Leo."

She cuddles me when I am tired and I feel warm and happy, like when Mom and Dad cuddle me after I have a bad dream.

The Day of the Iguana by Henry Winkler

DEZJANI B. - I thought it was very nice because it was about a clubhouse, an iguana and a movie. I want to have a clubhouse more than what I have and the pet iguana is like our chickens.

DAZ B. - I didn’t like the part where the kid took apart the box and all the pieces broke.

SYLVIA B. - The book is very funny. We made a deck and parked ourselves under the stars and read and read .

Daniel C. Update - Congratulations Again!
The last week of July turned out to be quite an 'achievement week' for Daniel. On Monday, July 26, he passed the last of a series of tests which earned him the rank of Cadet Senior Airman in the Civil Air Patrol. His next goal is to earn the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant.... On Tuesday the 27th, he passed his Intermediate Green Belt test and is now working toward achieving the 'Master Green Belt' rank. Finally on Thursday the 29th, his "Boxwood" Bonsai tree won 1st Place in the 'Formal Upright' class at the Amador County Fair!

Congratulations Daniel C.
Daniel C., an 8th grader at Mountain Oaks, is a member of the Hiram C. Meek Society, Children of the American Revolution. He submitted a photo essay in the Daughters of the American Revolution's annual Junior American Citizens Contest. This year's contest theme was "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave". Daniel's entry was a recollection of his weekend at the Capital Air Show in Sacramento last September. He wrote a few short paragraphs describing what he did as a Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol while attending the air show, and included about one dozen photographs that were taken while serving at the event.

Daniel's entry won first place at the State level, and second place at the Southwest Division. Had he won first place there, he would have gone to Washington DC for the final judging!

This was his first-ever entry into this contest and he will probably do this again next year.

Daniel also entered four trees in his first-ever Bonsai show on June 26th at the Ridge Road Garden Center. This was a "People's Choice" judging contest where his "Rainbow Surprise" tree took in the most votes in the Junior Division.
