  • It's Time to Start Work on Your Science Fair Project!
The all-school Mountain Oaks Science Fair will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015.  All ages are encouraged to participate.  Judges view the projects and interview the students.  Fourth through 12th grade students compete within their grade level and may be invited to participate in the County Science Fair and possibly the State competition.  Kindergarten through 3rd grade students are not judged, but they all receive a participation award.  This is a good way to introduce students to the scientific process as well as practice scientific thinking! Students who participate in science fairs not only have a great time, but they walk away with a true understanding of what it means to experiment.
Science Fair packets, including a 6-week timetable, are now available in the library.

  • Circle of Friends
We are initiating an exciting program for our families at Mountain Oaks, called Circle of Friends (COF). We are looking for non-disabled students to establish friendships with peers who have special needs. The purpose of the program is for these "Friends" to help their peers develop meaningful social interactions, in the natural environment. General education students will be trained, using a systematic approach, to model and shape appropriate social skills for their peers. They will also learn the definitions, benefits and challenges of individuals with disabilities to develop understanding and acceptance of differences.

We are specifically looking for students in grades 4-11, who can commit at least one day a week to participate in a COF activity and have lunch with their peer. If you or a friend are interested, you may pick up an application from your Mentor Teacher, our College and Career Counselor, Sisene, or Debbie Blankenship.

If you would like more information about this evidenced based program, click here to visit the Circle of Friends website.
