  • Calaveras Community Foundation Awards Mountain Oaks Grant for Electronics & Soldering Workshop

Many, many thanks to the Calaveras Community Foundation for awarding a grant to Mountain Oaks for an Electronics & Soldering – Make It STEM Workshop last year.

Soldering equipment was purchased and an introductory class taught by peer instructors was held December 2013, with additional workshops in January 2014, to learn the safety and basics of soldering and circuits. Eight to ten students ranging from 4th through 9th grade participated in the workshops. Students were introduced to the basic principles of electrical circuits: diodes, capacitors, transistors, potentiometers, and the importance of soldering to function. The workshop students then developed their own electronic circuits and soldered them onto circuit boards. Skills learned in those classes were shared with our ROV Teams and Lego Robotics workshops last year and this year.

The skills the original group of students gained through access to materials purchased with the grant funds have continued to benefit the larger Mountain Oaks community on an ongoing basis. There has been a wonderful ripple effect, from one small group of students to other student groups, from year to year, as a result of the Calaveras Community Foundation grant.

We appreciate the Calaveras Community Foundation!
